Does lack of sucrose in MS media produce contamination or chemical precipitate?

We are conducting an experiment with gametophytes of the fern Microlepia strigrosa at varied rates of sucrose in liquid MS medium. All of our 0g/L replicants are showing signs of what looks like contamination but could also be a chemical precipitant. The contamination/precipitant is not occurring in rates of sucrose 15g/L and above.
