Expired EDTA tubes may have decreased vacuum and will prevent a proper fill. Also, the anticoagulant used may not work that effectively and may not prevent the blood from clotting, though EDTA is stable.

How long has it been for the expiry of the EDTA tube? The advantage of using EDTA is that it does not distort blood cells, making it ideal for hematological tests. It inhibits clotting by chelating calcium from the blood. If EDTA is degraded, calcium will not chelate resulting in adverse effect on cell morphology.
