I have worked on the incorporation of GO nano-particles in PVA nano-fibers. The layered structure of GO has been observed from its morphology using SEM, but I have seen a significant reduction in particles size , when it is incorporated in nano-fibers; produced through electro-spinning.
The reason may be the use of sonication of GO NPs while preparing solutions for electro-spinning? or anything else!

We have observed the same in our work of coating RGO with polyanilin or Cobalt ferrite.
This might be similar to ripening. My experience is more with metal nanoparticles though. The bonding in the core of your particles is probably stronger than with gold, for example, but this might be worth reading in to.
Yeah, I think it's possible we said this for GO. But we don't say that for every solid nanoparticle. GO is dispersible in the solvent you use in PVA (I accept as de-ionized water). When you make a mixture, GO is dispersed in water and the GO layers are opened to decrease the particle size. You can further reduce particle size by sonication. You can even change the particle size depending on the duration of the sonication. You can damage GO layers when you extend the time too much. But we don't say that for all nanoparticles. The properties of the solvent and the nanomaterial in the solvent can completely change.
If high energy methods such as as ultrasonication are used to disperse the nano particles, the high energy especially if applied for prolonged periods of time can often cause the nanoparticles to break down into smaller segments. This is not always the case, whether or not a nanoparticle will break down is largely dependant on its material properties.
