I'm planning to take students in Private Higher Educational Institutes as my population. However, finding the actual population size or sample frame would not be possible in Sri Lankan context. So it will work as the barrier for using probability sampling method.
In a situation where a population frame is unavailable, does convenience sampling method acceptable for PhD Thesis? If not the option is to go for a case study option where my research will be limited to the institute I work. However, still doubt whether case study approach is sutiable for PhD study.

Yes, with some limitations. If the studies required control group to be compared to treatment group, for instance, than convenience sampling could not serve the purpose. Exploratory research that does not require comparison study, convenience sampling may do the job. See links below for references.
