I have several times here come across responses full of what seems to be erudite allusions to books and experts, but upon second reading appears devoid of the writer's own thoughts and ideas.
I appreciate nevertheless that there are different interpretations of 'scholar'.

The late journalist, A. A. Gill, held that Mary Beard, the Classicist, was knowledgeable but not necessarily intelligent. Having viewed her recent BBC broadcasts, with their politically correct silliness, I must agree. She has ceased to write history but propaganda. Nevertheless, this is not that unusual in the field. One of the best Ancient Historians now writing is Holland, who is not a PhD holder.
