It is definitely dependant on who's measuring it. Plekhanov spoke of the beauty women with strong backs and calloused hands showed. In China not very long ago bound feet and long finger nails were indicators of beauty. Even today in India fair skin is considered advantageous in finding a spouse whereas my culture considers a nice tan is meant to look good. From a philosophical perspective it seems that beauty is ideologically based. Some cultures have no problem practicing genital mutilation or executing women who fail to cover their heads and, some believe they stand above it all and dictate what is right, good and beautiful for us all. It maybe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder however what each beholds is dependant to a large extent on what we know, what we are taught and how remote we are from our instincts. After all beauty is a conscious judgement and not an instinctive one. That is unless you believe one can be ruled by instinct and be objective at one and the same time.
