Metabolic activity stops at sub-zero temperatures for most bacteria handled in laboratories. So, even if your bacteria can metabolize glycerol it can do precious little when stored at -20/-70 C as a glycerol stock.
Basically how much time period you want to preserve the culture. If it is more than few years, it is always advisable to store in liquid nitrogen. In such case, DMSO also can be used as a preservative. I found DMSO practically better than glycerol especially for cells which are more sensitive than bacteria. If storage period is less, even gycerol can be used for storage at -20 ot -70 deg C. At this temp, there is no metabolism. So, doesn't matter even if that organism uses glycerol or not.
