In ETL free PSC, there can be contact between perovskite absorber and FTO. In HTL free PSC there can be contact between gold and perovskite absorber.

In case that the ETL is absent, the FTO must work as an ETL and at the same time as an cathode metal. Also Gold must work as a HTL and as an anode.

Following the above expert's suggestions, it was found that ETL or HTL free perovskite solar cells are not efficient as the solar cells from a normal Perovskite solar cells even the energy alignments could be good to inject either holes or electrons from the electrodes such as gold or FTO. It is likely that quenching the excitons form a barrier. Therefore, it is not recommended to use the device structures for perovskite solar cells without ETL or HTL layers. The best way for you to learn is to make three different types (ETL free, HTL free and normal structure) of devices to compare with. You will learn in depth.
