I have some samples that apparently stimulated the growth of some pathogenic bacteria during an antimicrobial assay. I have been trying to find a good review on antimicrobial assays and microbial growth promoting bacteria, but no luck so far. Has anyone ever had similar results? Any information regarding this subject would be highly appreciated.
Campylobacter show enhanced survival in water/soils when in co-culture with Pseudomonas. Perhaps the better example is in polymicrobial biofilms where several species of bacteria, protozoa and algae may live together. An example of this is the epilithon-the 'slimy' layer on stones in rivers and lakes. It is also likely there are a number of symbiotic relationships between bacterial members of the intestinal and other microbiota.
