Abstract:

Objective: to think through the theoretical foundations of Theater applied to Nursing, from the perspective of university education. Method: this is reflective theoretical study on the association of concepts from Theater and Nursing and its application to education. Results: we prepared three reflection units describing nurse's education, contextualizing the theoretical aspects of Nursing in education, and, finally, applying the theoretical bases of Theater in this context. Conclusion: Theater characterized itself as an innovative strategy for Nursing education and it motivates us to stay on this pathway from a liberating perspective that breaks with the domination of thought. Adding the strategies of Theater and the foundations on the body proves to be a possible pathway in Nursing education, as it is fulfilled in the scenes presented in the classroom, in the tutorial space, in skill laboratories, or in the settings where professional practice actually takes place.

Hi.. there has been a study done by some researchers from Harvard looking at the use of art theory to teach observation skills.  See the attachments below.  Although not designed specifically for nursing students a similar research methodology could be used.  We are looking at doing a similar study to observe how drawing might help students learn about and remember human anatomy.

I've worked with Health Services students,with maximum security correctional inmates, profoundly deaf, refugee visa students, Ed Support (disabilities), Occupational Therapy students, actors and theatre studies students using both movement and drama experiences as both training and in the context of creative and personal development. With Theatre, Textile and Fine Art students I worked on exploring anatomy through both life drawing and physical interpretation of drawing with music and poetry. I have a text called Acts of Change out there you may be able to access (through Trove perhaps). This will have some uses of Drama in Education too you may find useful.

The work of Moshe Feldenkrais (was a physicist) for body is great, Kristin Linklater's work on Voice and Alexander Technique all used in actor training. Augusto Boal (Brazil) is always a good read too. He was a theatre director and practitioner. If you have any specific questions feel free to contact and I'm happy to assist. Philip
