If you want to objectively compare surface reflectance spectra, you are looking for spectroradiometric measurements, which are calibrated against a known reference. The readings of spectrometers are not necessarily adjusted for spectral response of the detector(s), input optics and light source. Spectroradiometres are.

Thanks for your answer, I was not aware of the instruments other than spectrophotometers for measuring surface reflectance spectra. Since asking the question I have found that the University of Eastern FInland has made a large number of spectral reflectance curves available at http://cs.joensuu.fi/~spectral/databases/download/munsell_spec_matt.htm and neighbouring pages. They have included information about the equipment used and how the equipment was calibrated, so I will be using that for my analysis.

You may need to correct the spectral reflectances of the Munsell chips found at the website of the University of Eastern FInland. For more info:

Hi Dimitris, unfortunately I do not have access to that document. I have done my analysis so far on the matt spectral reflectances, so I hope that as the title refers specifically to the gloss spectral database, the correction is not needed.
