We would like to extract analytes from flea eggs to analyze using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The eggs are about 0.5 mm in size (maximal length) and we have 20-100 eggs in a eppendorf tube.
I feel this paper (they did NMR metabolomcis thought, lower throughput): Article Purification of Transcripts and Metabolites from Drosophila Heads
in JOVE on Drosophila "heads (comparable sizes to Eggs?)" doing metabolomics after extraction with "bead beating/ homogenization".
I can not think of a reason as to why that would not work for eggs!
The lysis workflow and extraction can be as theirs with some optimization on beating cycles and solvents to use for extraction depending on the 'metabolite classes of interest' or if more untargeted analysis.
