LGB-affirmative counselor competency. The SOCCS (Bidell,

2005) is a self-report measure of LGB-affirmative counselor

competency. The 29 items of the SOCCS are rated on a 7-point

scale ranging from 1 (not at all true) to 7 (totally true). Higher

scores are indicative of greater levels of sexual orientation

counselor competency. Approximately 40% of the total variance

was accounted for by a factor analysis that yielded a

three-factor solution. These three factors were labeled (a)

Skills, with 11 items focusing on LGB counseling skills; (b)

Attitudinal Awareness, including 10 items examining a counselor’s

LGB explicit prejudices and biases; and (c) Knowledge,

consisting of eight items examining pecific issues facing

LGB clients. The coefficient alpha for the overall SOCCS was

.90 and ranged between .91 and .76 for the three subscales.

One-week test–retest reliability for the overall SOCCS was

.84. Convergent validity was established for each of the

three subscales (Attitudes, Skills, and Knowledge) using

existing measures of LGB bias, basic counseling skills, and

multicultural knowledge, respectively. I established criterion

validity by demonstrating that LGB respondents, as well as

those with more education, scored significantly higher on the

SOCCS. Discriminant validity was also established through

comparisons with social desirability research test items.

Religious conservatism.

The 20-item RFS (Altemeyer &

Hunsberger, 1992) assesses overall attitudes about a person’s

religious conservatism, not specific to faith or denomination.

The RFS uses a 9-point Likert-type response scale ranging

from –4 (very strongly disagree) to 0 (neutral) to +4 (very

strongly agree). The scale has a .93 Cronbach’s index of

internal consistency and a mean interitem correlation of .37.

No test–retest reliability data are reported on this instrument.

Convergent validity was demonstrated by comparing RFS

scores to measures of LGB prejudice and right-wing authoritarianism.

Criterion validity was established by correlating

RFS with church attendance (r = .64) and with scripture

reading (r = .51). The RFS has been shown to be reliable and

valid for individuals of Christian, Hindu, Jewish, and Muslim

faiths (Altemeyer & Hunsberger, 1992; Hunsberger, 1996).

Thanks for your answer. I was referring more to whether they have certain "good counselor" characteristics and whether they would be a food fit for a professional counselor program.
