Does anyone has the same issue of the relative low survival rate of the obese mice after surgery? My mice were anesthetized by ketamine and xyline. I also give the pain killer (Buprenophine) before the surgery. WT controle mice lives well with 100% survival rate. All the procedures are followed the instruction of aseptic surgery.
Does anyone know how to improve the survival rate for those obese mice?
Wonder about the utility of melatonin, which is now being recommended as a premed prior to bariatric surgery, with positive benefits on patient recovery (Ivry et al, in press).
based on my experience,post surgery is important. Cover the mice with a piece of gauze and put some bedding on it. A bit of TLC will go far.

Are you returning the mice to a warm cage with nesting material such as tissues
When doing vasectomies and embryo transfers we would anaesthetised the mice with Fluothane and administered a pre-surgery injections of carprofen.
We preheated clean cages on a heat pad and monitored the post surgery recovery until we were happy that the mouse was fully recovered and active.
Then checked them again after a few hours.
