There are some pilot microgrid projects. Most of them are based on a weakly connected islands to central grid. You may search google, for example

This seems to be a good (free) summary for the state of the art in the USA "Powering Microgrids for the 21st-Century Electrical System" https://www.nema.org

It quotes 124 installations in the USA 2 years ago. More recent reports give estimates of 1700-1900 installations
