The Barcelona and Boston cases are among the ones I insist on in my teaching, with a reflection both on how the models were constructed as such and on the way in which they were later criticized.

It may be a bit old, but from a critical perspective I recommend you to read abour retail gentrification. I don't have any in mind, but Zukin hat some papers about this issue.
Zukin, S., Trujillo, V., Frase, P., Jackson, D., Recuber, T. and Walker, A. (2009), New Retail Capital and Neighborhood Change: Boutiques and Gentrification in New York City. City & Community, 8: 47–64. doi: 10.1111/j.1540-6040.2009.01269.x
I worked with Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Lisboa, Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre, because I wanted to compare with ongoing process in Salvador. But it's in portuguese.
In Seville (Spain) , it is very interesting this tematic, because food markets generates a lot of life in the historic city center. In that sense, there are several markets that work for decades such as the "Mercado de Triana". Inspired by this type has recently built the "Mercado de la Encarnación" with his polemic in economic terms and gentrification but not less interesting in terms of urban regeneration and urban healthy eating.

Columbia Market has an interesting history. By 1840, the street market had degenerated into a slum but, influenced by Dickens, the philanthropist Angela Burdett-Coutts built a magnificent covered marketplace which was, unfortunately, hit by a 50kg bomb during the Blitz in 1940 and demolished in 1958. Whilst the current street market is thriving, local traders and street life could be threatened by mega-urban development.
I would like to share with you the work realized through an Urbact Action "markets", aimed at understanding and exploring the role of urban markets as key drivers of change in terms of local economic development, regeneration and sustainable living.
