I'm looking for data concerning the levels of trace elements in blood and hair of alpaca, for a bioaccumulation study, but the bibliography on the subject is scarce...
In the clinical laboratory, forensic or not, we use hair and nails to test for heavy metals such as Mercury, silver, gold, and also arsenic. I am sure other elements can be detected in that manner. I would suggest looking at textbooks of analytical chemistry or google forensic medcince AND trace element poisoning.
I'm sure that hair are useful bioindicators of trace elements, my problem is the paucity of data about alpaca, I can not compare my data about trace elements in alpaca blood/hair with others...
You can try simultaneously with morphometric information such as hair length, color changes (using professional image processing software and images with good resolution in lighting conditions, brightness, intensity, etc, and/or any other similar features or characteristics typical of the species. You may try first measuring variables related to expected changes in those variables due to hypothesized or proved pollutant present therein. Of course, this will provide you qualitative present but not quantitative measuring.
In blood, you may determine enzymatic and non enzymatic components of the biological response in front of oxidative stress and thus you may compare with other species, because a lot of data is available. I suggest you always do a data transformation for allowing comparison with other previous findings.
For example, reporting µg of X / mg of wet or dry tissue, per cellular concentration, per tissue density (if you want to express variation when tissue condition changes or when comparing similar tissues in different species, or per total body surface and so on. Thus, you may compare better even when you should take care with some interpretations and selecting criteria for better intensive parameter.
Hello. I would like you to give me your opinion on my answer. I am worried because I do not understand why someone selected "downvoted" for my answer. It may have been a confusion by voting criteria and I think someone has acted ethically.
Is there an error in the content? Please, could someone review the content and give me feedback about voting? I appreciate if you message me directly correcting my answer if I was wrong.
Hi frenkel, I don't know why someone downvoted your answer. Personally, i don't like to downvote anyone answer cause even if the answer is not helpful I really appreciate that people try to help me, following their own knowledge about the topic.
Regarding was I wanted to know , i 'm looking for people that used analytical tecnique such as ICP-MS to quantify trace elements concentrations in alpaca blood and hair ( cause it was what I 've already done) or have knowledge about reference values about metals in blood and hair of this animal specie.
