I am just trying to figure out how to simulate the behaviour of the power grid with the inclusion of DERs and was wondering what would be the most suitable simulator that I can obtain for free.
If you have Matlab license, 2016a and newer versions have examples for Smart Grid simulations.
GridLAB-D is a distribution system simulator that is open source, has several DER models and is extensible to add and share more. See www.gridlabd.org/
