you could actually grind filter paper, which will - depending on the quality - have between 97-100% cellulose content (especially ashless grade). Actually filter paper would be the preferred substrate as its real crystaline cellulose, whereas CMC is soluble, and has been wrongly used as an indicator for whole cellulase activity. For cellulose depolymerization exocellulases are dominant in the degradation of crystalline and not soluble (e.g. CMC) cellulose.
