I'm looking for an image analysis program in which I can make some measurement in histologic sections of cartilage. I am especially interested in a program which will make it possible to give surface area information on a manually selected area. Also drawing lines, to divide it into three equal parts would be nice. Does anyone know such a program? Photoshop doesn't have these tools unfortunately.

We use ImageJ as our main image analysis software.

I use both ImageJ (free) and ImagePro (paid), they are both good tools.
Another option is to use stereology, especially for surface area quantification. There is a good free software for this, the STEPanizer (http://www.stepanizer.com/). They have a publication on Journal of Microscopy explaining how the program works (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21375529).

We use Image-Pro Plus, and it works really fine, with a lot of useful tools.

As stated above, the best freeware software for morphological image analysis is ImageJ or FIJI. Image-Pro Plus is also a very good option, but you need to buy it.
ImageJ is my recommendation, as it is a freeware and easy to use.
Photoshop also has the counting and measure tool. I often count the cell by photoshop because I'm more familiar with it.
ImageJ as a freeware option. The analytical modules in Zeiss ZEN II are also good. Solutions like Visiopharm's Visiomorph DP and Definiens Tissue Studio are really good but quite expensive.
Aperio ImageScope is another useful program, besides ImageJ. Good luck.
