I have to do a facial surgery on growing rats and for that I need to know the dosage of I/M penicillin G and paracetamol that should be given to prevent postoperative infection and pain in wistar rats of 1 month age and 70 grams weight approx.

Potassium penicillin 100,000 IU/kg IM twice daily is recommended for rats (Hawk and Leary). However, postoperative antibiotics should not be used to replace aseptic surgical procedure. For acetaminophen, 100-300 mg/kg PO is recommended (Hawk and Leary). If you can get Metacam or metacam SR, it works much better. Metacam SR only needs to be dosed once every 72 hours at 4mg/kg.

thank you very much leslie it was indeed a great help but I will be doing surgery of temporomandibular joint after which it will be difficult to administer PO. are there any IM preparations available?
