Does anyone have hints on using the SSR function in R to make quintic splines?

I'm hoping to use quintic splines to even out some locomotion position data. I next want to calculate maximum first and second derivatives. I've found the ASSIST package in R, but the documentation is missing some steps and I haven't been able to follow. Any suggestions?
