A good example of the "jumping to conclusions" bias is shown by all those psychiatric researchers who find structural brain abnormalities in psychosis, and conclude that these must be the primary cause of the disease rather than the result.
I am interested in this and I look forward to hearing how much unpublished or published data is available.
I can certainly attest to nursing staff jumping to conclusions because of cursory assessments. I suspect this is a self-protective adaptation to reduce decision fatigue and task overload.
Effective and authentic engagement between staff and patients is of course the magic bullet in gaining a more mature understanding of mental status--not just a convenient gut response or even a formal mental status evaluation.
