I am trying to isolate fungi and bacteria from various soil samples that have the ability to degrade keratinous substances like feather/hair. I already tried various setups on solid and in liquid media that were supplemented with hair and/or feather particles but so far I could not get a good degrading organism. Does anyone have a good technique to effectively screen for such organisms? Or an effective way to grind hair/feathers to add them to the media in a pulverized form?

you can add keratin azure ( which is in powdered form) in mineral salt medium as the soul soul source of carrbon and nitrogen...
I think it's not neccessary to buy keratin azure. You can use feathers or hair. But what king of liquid medium did you tried? If it was a complex one with glucose or any other easy metabolised substrate, the organisms wouldn't use the feathers/hair. Try a mineral salt medium and add feathers as the only substrate.
