You say you want to use it as a tool to write a review. Can you say more about this review? What it is exactly that you need to review, and why? Do you already have some idea of the themes you hope to find, or are you 'starting from scratch'? And when you say 'review,' do you mean something more like 'analyze'? If you doing thematic content analysis, then the last question is actually irrelevant, since looking for themes is already analysis.

When doing content analysis, you need to understand/consider whether you are interested in studying the frequency with which things occur in the content (in other words, the manifest content), or whether you are interested in studying the meanings held within the content (in other words, the latent content). Thematic content analysis deals with latent content; you'll be looking for themes within the content, but which must be interpreted from it, rather than simply counted. The idea basically is that you're looking for significance within the text(s) you are analyzing/reviewing. 

It seems to me the main issue will be whether you know what you're looking for. If you have a set of concepts/themes in mind already, then coding texts for those themes should be relatively straightforward. But you should realize from the start that what you find in the data may still be different from what other people find. That's because the meanings are latent and must interpreted...and no two people will always interpret meaning in the same way. So you and a colleague might analyze/review the same texts, but come away with different themes, and/or with different tied to those themes.

If you have no themes in mind, then the process is much more open-ended and can be quite frustrating because you may either that you're not finding enough, or that you're finding too much. It takes time and practice (in addition to know why you're doing the work) before you can feel comfortable doing it.

Try doing a search for qualitative content analysis instead and you will find many many methods papers on the subject.

Chapter Emergent themes

Thank you Williams. To add a few answers to your question- I am planning to write a literature review article on employee engagement, its role in reducing attrition in service sector. I discovered an article that followed TCA by taking only 9 relevant articles. So, I was quite intrigued with the tool and there is a dearth of literature in employee engagement. I am yet to gain the confidence of using it for my paper since I have no prior experience in qualitative research
