In a reconstruction of the density profile of an atomic gas jet emanating from an axis-symmetric converging microscopic nozzle, we got from the Abel inversion of some slices a dip in the density at the axis of symmetry of the jet, where we expected to find the maximum value of the density. Does anybody know of such a phenomena and what the cause of it?
I'd greatly appreciate if you can refer me to scientific sources discussing this matter.
We have made several measurements with different pressures in the gas reservoir ( ranging from 1 bar- 5 bar). For each of the reservoir pressures we have made two measurements. The nozzle exit is placed in a vacuum chamber of 10^(-4) Torr. The jet is supersonic. The dip that was observerd at the axis of symmetry does not appear in all the reconstructed slices along the jet. Only in some slices especially in the slices (furthest from the nozzle exit ) of measurement of 1.5 bar reservoir pressure. In the rest measurements it's appearance is not very consistent in two different measurements of the same reservoir pressure.
Have you detected any electrical charges / ionization in your jet? If it is ionized (as e. g. when passing through the nozzle), it may happen you'd see plasma oscillations...
