Does anybody know how a cell can observe number and type of neighbor cells?

For example, how does a cell know if there are five cells in the neighborhood of it which three of them are tumor cells and two others are immune cells? Is it via signal passing? If so, which signals? Does gap junction communication play a roll, here?

I think cells crosstalk with each other by sending cell signaling molecules like matrix metallo -proteinases (MMPs). Also two cells can directly talk with each other with the help of integrins which are involved in both inside out and outside in signaling
