In the catalysed reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, why is the increase in the absorbance of 4-aminophenol not as significant as the decrease in the absorbance of 4-nitrophenol?
In other words, why is the absorbance of 4-aminophenol very low compared to the absorbance of 4-nitrophenol?
If you mean UV-Vis absorbance, you should check what their respective extinction coefficients are, I can't remember them off the top of my head, but I believe they are quite different... also, with this particular redox couple, you should be careful with what your set-up is like, are you doing this electrochemically? If you are, your counter electrode could easily revert the reaction or even oxidise the 4-nitrophenol, which would consume it but not produce 4-aminophenol...
