I want to perform adrenalectomy in rats for my study. But I don't know how long rats can live after the surgery? What are the things to care during or after surgery?
Adrenalectomized animals are extremely sensitive to injury and blood loss, therefore, the perfection of the operative gland removal technique strongly influences the duration of survival of such animals. Young animals die much faster than adults. Healthy animals that are well nourished live longer after removal of the adrenal glands than animals in poor conditions.Diet is also of great importance for the survival of the operated animals. The gland capsule during surgery is easily torn, and if at least one layer of cells remains in the body, it begins to proliferate and ensures the survival of the animal for an indefinitely long time (?). Preservation in rats of the remnant of the cortical substance of the adrenal gland in combination with unilateral iefractomy and the transfer of animals to a sodium-rich diet leads to the development of hypertension.

Rats live up to 17 days or more, as they have additional interrenal tissue, guinea pigs - from 4 to 7 days.

Intracavitary operations are complex and dangerous. It happens that the rat dies even after the sutures are removed.
