Patients with HLH can have severe neutropenia. When you treat them with Etoposide and Dexamethasone, is there any role for using G-CSF?
Data shows that they can get sicker when you use growth factors.
Dr. Arellano and Dr. Mrdenovic, thank you for your answers. I think there is evidence that G-CSF can worsen HLH. Please, look at these two papers:
1. Glasser L, et al. Florid histiocytic hemophagocytosis following therapy with long acting G-CSF (pegfilgrastim). Am. J. Hematol. 82:753-757, 2007.
2. Padhi S, et al. Hemaophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis: critical reapraisal of a potentially under-recognized condition. Front. Med. 7:492-498, 2013.
I agree with the claims of Dr.Mrdenovic. We rare treat children with CSF in HLH
