Environmental pollution is the biggest challenge for mankind. Do you think we can contribute to control environmental pollution? What are you doing for this.
I am a researcher of Environmental Engineering. But I am a little bit pessimistic about this problem. I think it is impossible to ”control” the environmental problem. It is human arrogance, I think. The environmental pollution has achieved the point not to control. What we can do for this problem is just to make the progress of the pollution slowly, not originally.
As long as we humans live, the environmental problem cannot be solved, I think.
We should try to minimise further pollution, should plant more trees, be more socially responsible and more over strict environmental control laws should be imposed.
The solution is to activate the role of NGOs, to integrate environmental problems into the structure of scientific research, to secure appropriate sources of income, to conduct research on environmental pollution
It is a big problem and I am a bit pessimistic too (as Satoshi pointed out). Affluence/consumerism, which is matched by population growth demanding/expecting a continuous economic growth are major challenges too in order to minimize/control pollution. Finally, I think, lack, or poor education about this matter as somebody else will deal with the issue. The only hope to mitigate pollution is to work at a small scale first, through education and hands-on, demonstrations for curricula at every level of instruction.
humans have been polluting the Earth like never before. There is rarely a place today that has not been subjected to pollutants in one form or another. Some pollution comes in a visible form, like pieces of plastic washed up on our beaches, or illegal dumpsites in groves nearby large cities.
Or there is a hidden and dangerous pollution of the air we breathe daily. Our continuous existence depends on it, and yet, air is full of extremely toxic particles. We can can contribute in preventing air pollution through several ways. This ways include:
Reducing the amount carbon dioxide emission in the atmosphere. Currently a state in Nigeria is experience a serious environmental pollution by the effect of large amount of black soot being released to the atmosphere leading to serious respiratory difficulties to the people in that city.
It is ONLY a collective efforts (Active Societal Participation) of ALL HUMANS that will solve the environmental challenges we are facing.
Personally, I have started a massive Environmental Sustainability Education through publications, conference presentations, as well as village and township workshops. I have been liaising with local communities to juice environmental programs as part of their festive occasions.
The environment is our treasure which we must maintain it with the greatest care so that we can hand it over to our future progeny in its pristine state. If we fail, the spirits and our ancestors would punish us eternally for it!
Humans can definitely contribute to help make our environment healthy. Of course, there are natural forces such as volcanoes, earhquakes, forest fires that are beyond human ability to totally control.
Stop smoking or at least follow the “No Smoking” sign.Use unleaded gasoline in your cars.Keep your car properly maintained to keep it in good running condition to avoid smoke emissions.Share a ride or engage in car pooling.Instead of using your cars, choose to walk or ride a bicycle whenever possible. With this eco-friendly practice, you will also be healthier and happier by staying fit.Never use open fires to dispose of wastes.Adopt the 3Rs of solid waste management: reduce, reuse and recycle. Inorganic materials such as metals, glass and plastic; also organic materials like paper, can be reclaimed and recycled.
Sure we can...First we should build a strong conviction in people's minds about the impotance of our environment to humans life and the danger of pollution, then we should make suggestions for how to solve its problems as mentioned above.
In my opinion, for this purpose the most important thing is to set an efficient recycling system.
Environmental education is also one of the most important points for controlling environmental pollution which includes the following objectives based on the major outcome of the 1975 workshop on environmental education:
(1) Awareness of the problems.
(2) Providing knowledge to deal with the problems.
(3) Developing new attitudes towards environmental problems.
(4) Developing skills for solving environmental problems.
(5) Providing development or evaluation ability in these areas.
(6) Increasing participation and involvement of the public.
(7) A broad recognition of the facts that we are all responsible for helping to solve environmental problems.
Action Committee of 68th session of Indian Science Congress held at Varanasi (1981) recommended the following points on environmental management:
1. Immediate implementation of acts against air pollution, water pollution and noise pollution.
2. There should be specific standards for the use of agricultural chemicals such as insecticides, pesticides and fertilizers.
3. Action is necessary against food adulteration, drug control and against factories producing effluents.
4. Department of Environment should be empowered for initiating legislative measures by the Parliament. Department should have control of soil, air and water environment and should maintain a strict vigilance over metropolitan and industrial areas. There should be regular monitoring of air and water quality. Penalty should be imposed on offenders not adhering to set standards against air, water, noise and other sources of pollution.
5. Environmental protection should be included in the concurrent list of constitution.
6. Government and voluntary agencies should be provided special incentives for successful anti-pollution researches.
7. Department of Environment should carry out publications on health safety and set directive criteria for different pollutants.
8. Environmental education should be made compulsory in the curricula of schools, colleges and universities. This has already been recommended by. The Supreme Court of India in 2005.
9. Mass communication media should be adopted for information related to environmental problems.
10. Scientific societies NGOs, Associations and Academies should create a temper of environmental problems in the rural and urban areas.
11. Plantation of trees suited to different climates should be adopted. Deforestation must be legally checked.
12. Wildlife board and Environment cell should be created in each state. Central and State Pollution boards have already been established.
13. Recycling plants for municipal wastes and sewage should be established. In many cities it has already been implemented.
14. Anti-pollution tax should be imposed on industries for discharging the effluents.
15. Reclamation of land to its original state should be the responsibility of the users. There should be legislation against violation for this.
16. Encouragements and incentives should be given to voluntary movements as “Chipko movement” for the protection of plants.
17. In agriculture, biological control of pests should be applied to replace wide use of insecticides, pesticides and fungicides. Biological nitrogen fixation should be adopted.
18. Several Biosphere Reserves containing endangered or rare or commercially important species should be established as early as possible.
19. Gene Pool Reserves and Gene Sanctuaries should be demarcated and protected in their natural environment to preserve wild germ-plasm from extinction and conservation.
20. For conservation of flora and fauna the list of endangered species should be continuously renewed.
21. Aero-biological centres should be established in different parts of India.
22. Brick fields should be prohibited by law near agricultural or populated areas.
23. Cleaning of choked lakes and rivers should be done regularly.
24. Different aspects of alternative energy resources should be created as biomass, energy plantation, fuel energy etc. Social forestry should be encouraged.
25. A suitable agency should be established for conservation and monitoring of marine resources and providing protection against pollution hazards.
26. Satellite and space technology may be adopted for weather forecasting, agriculture resource inventories and monitoring of air borne particles.
27. Airport areas should be separated to minimize pollution from noise.
28. Genetic counselling units should be established at different regions of India to monitor genetic disorders.
29. Scientific, administrative and social measures must be adopted to check pollution explosion.
30. At different levels of planning, the involvement of ecologists is essential. All programmes for development should be undertaken without or with the least disturbances to the natural ecosystem.
Reducing the use of personal vehicles such as cars etc. and using mass transportation facilities such as Govt. Buses etc. for offices and auto car for market or personnel works .use battery operated vehicles like two wheels like scooty and using sustainable energy e Rickshaw. Use maximum solar energy and wind energy for common use. Rain harvesting approaches be followed in sectors for efficient use of water which will be serious problem in next century. For conservation of flora and fauna the list of endangered species should be continuously renewed. Minimize the use of insecticides, pesticides and fungicides in crops and horticulture crops
a lot of things can be done, many of them have been previously written, most of them require a total change of our life style.
I suggest to drive slowly your car, some studies outlined that aggressive driving cause an increase in fuel consumption that may reach up to 50% and a pollution increase that can overcame 100%.
The time you gain by aggressive driving very often you lose in a futile way.
We can collaborate to control pollution in environment by:
a. Methods of controlling gaseous pollutants –
1. Combustion – This technique is used when the pollutants are in the form of organic gases or vapors. During flame combustion or catalytic process, these organic pollutants are converted into water vapor and relatively less harmful products, such as CO2.
2. Absorption – In this technique, the gaseous effluents are passed through scrubbers or absorbers. These contain a suitable liquid absorbent, which removes or modifies one or more of the pollutants present in the gaseous effluents.
3. Adsorption – The gaseous effluents are passed through porous solid adsorbents kept in suitable containers. The organic and inorganic constituents of the effluent gases are trapped at the interface of the solid adsorbent by physical adsorbent.
b. Methods to control particulate emissions –
1. Mechanical devices generally work on the basis of the following:
(i) Gravity: In this process, the particles settle down by gravitational force.
(ii) Sudden change in direction of the gas flow. This causes the particles to separate out due to greater momentum.
2. Fabric Filters: The gases containing dust are passed through a porous medium. These porous media may be woven or filled fabrics. The particles present in the gas are trapped and collected in the filters. The gases freed from the particles are discharged.
3. Wet Scrubbers: Wet scrubbers are used in chemical, mining and metallurgical industries to trap SO2, NH3, metal fumes, etc.
4. Electrostatic Precipitators: When a gas or an air stream containing aerosols in the form of dust, fumes or mist, is passed between two electrodes, then, the aerosol particles get precipitated on the electrode.
Thanks to all for the replies. What is your current contribution to control environmental pollution. In India , particularly Punjab people were burning paddy in fields. But this time such incidents are negligibly small. So this time air pollution is little bit less.
On my part I have started planting trees. Using public transport mostly.I have stopped using polythene bags and using bag made from cloth whenever going to market purchasing anything. Never smoked. ........Giving advice to my daughter and my students to be more responsible towards environment.
eat less meat, do not waste the water, using public transportation, save the energy etc. . . a little attention on your behavior may have a great impact on pollution level
Yeah, you have many ways to reduce pollution in envrionment.
If you did all advises, environmental pollution would be decresed.
But, you know, the number of world popullation is increasing rapidry, near future it achived to 10 billion in the world.
And, for example, mainly in asia, huge amount of plastic waste flows into ocean. Till 2050, the amount of fish would be equel to the amount of plastic in the ocean all over the world, you know.
Environmental problem is not solved so easily. I always feel it as an environmental engieering researcher.
Can you live without electricity from nuclear power plant in the third-world, exception Germany? Can you live not using plastic completely? Can you put the priority the environmental problem solution than your nation economy problem?
This problem is not simple and too complex.
We environmental scientists know the reality of this problem directry. Just agenda and policy are not enough.
However, such a lot of reserchers in many fields concern this problem and have own opinions. I belive your passion for solving environmetal pollution would lead the world to better one.
zero pollution is possible if we merge sustainable development pillars togather by proper use of environmental resources, monitoring production and care for the environmental segments and the life within the different ecosystems.zero pollution needs palyers in the economic development, resource utilisation and environmental watch managers collaboration. you can not maximize output and the expense of the health and people and depletion of natural resources. Thank you.
For the first time in the world, 2008 constitution of Ecuador recognized the right of nature and the ecosystems to exist and flourish, just like any human being. It gave water the status of a patrimony, which needs to be preserved for posterity, and that its provision should not be a marketable service. Bolivian government also passed laws in 2010 and 2012 treating ‘mother earth’ as a subject of public interest. Is anybody else listening? UN itself is full of empty words, no real action. Even the same President who signed below the 2008 Ecuador constitution was pushed by the polluting mafia to annul some of its restrictions. I don't think we are still ready to walk the talk. We all need to rethink our ways of life. The planet is not ours to consume, but to preserve it for those who will come later.
I’m very pessimistic on the environmental problem, said above. One idea supports my idea or feeling. That is the Steven Hawking idea ”Human should search another planet to live”.
I admit his idea is unrealistic and seems impossible. But the environmental problem or pollution is so serious, he thought. The current situation is harder than we think. So I think it is very difficult to control the environmental pollution. Just writing your profound policies on your agenda achievement does not solve this problem. Very limited that we can contribute. So we have to make an effort to minimize the pollution by the 7 billion mankind. And we need a drastic way to solve this problem. We have to seek this way, decide and carry on.
Every human activities end up in generating waste which pollutes the environment. even in our conscious effort to manage the generated waste, we also end up in polluting the environment. pollution can not be eliminated, it can only be reduced.
pollution means many different things, including toxins within the environment.A large source of pollution is fossil fuels. We burn oil and coal for fuel, which releases previously stored carbon dioxide. This has increased considerably in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution and has been implicated in global warming. Oil is also used to make plastics. These are very useful, but degrade very slowly. Unlike paper and natural fibers, plastics will last for often hundreds of years in the ground (sometimes leaking toxins). This problem is exacerbated by a culture in which plastics are made cheaply, without including the cost of the environmental damage they later do. Plastics also cause visual pollution on beaches, and there is a large area of the ocean covered in plastic shreds due to dumping at sea.
Human waste causes pollution (excrement) which is dealt with in developed countries by waste water treatment and sewage systems. Prior to this, and in developing countries, bacteria from human waste are a huge cause of deaths. Indeed, water treatment is often considered the greatest advance in human health in human history. Toxic pollutions, esp. metals, also arise from industrial processes. These are dangerous because they can have effects on the development of humans and animals, and often get concentrated in the food chain (i.e. if you eat alot of fish with mercury in them, you will absorb more mercury than any single fish).
More modern worries about pollution include endocrine disruptions. These are chemicals that affect the reproductive system, often making fish hermaphrodites. There is also controversy over falling sperm counts in humans, as many believe (though it is not proven) that it is due to endocrine disruptions in the environment.
Stopping pollution is important for the survival of our planet, and even more importantly, the health and well-being of the people who depend on it. The air we breathe is laden with hazardous contaminants, and our oceans and waterways have been poisoned with chemicals. Left unabated, pollution could leave us with a planet earth sapped of its beauty, vitality, and diversity. We believe in diversity and unity like every country has to take part in controlling the environmental pollution at their level as well as at global levels, its every ones responsibility at their end.
I agree with Satoshi Nakao , but i think one of the way forward is to look into tackling pollution at the point of generation. for instance, can a gas trapping device be attached to the exhaust of a vehicle. this ill trap all the gases released from the exhaust.

Friends, I think we need to take a step back. We are a group of researchers, a special sector of the society with more than enough information about the environment (compared to the rest) and we don't seem to understand the problem, to begin with. If we don't, do you think the rest of the society will?
Leave aside the climatic changes. When did we begin to contaminate the environment? It started with glyphosate? with STIHL saw? with chemical fertilizers? with petroleum? with coal? with sugarcane fields? with silver mining in Potosi? with irrigated agriculture? with sedentarism? with the Clovis-point-killing of mammoths? or when we came down the tree?
See what I am getting at? We all have been changing the environment since the beginning, one way or another, at different scales and at different places. When someone is GREEDY, that creates NEEDS. Then come the DEEDS. May be there weren't that many greedy, then? How many is too many?
Are we all that greedy? NOT ME! ARE YOU?
If you are not as greedy as your neighbor, would you mind having the patience and taking the time to convince him/her? Then two of you can work on two others!
It took us so long to get to this point. It may not take that long to reverse the trend, BUT LET'S START TODAY!
One of the contributions to control environmental pollution is forwarding crop residues to beneficial industries, instead of just burning them. This is illustrated in the below mentioned review. Happy new year.
