Sexual harassment and violence against women is a harsh crime that affects the whole society not just the individual. according to its significance, do you think design can help solving the problem?
Its a burning issue actually. Its more with the psychology of a person to do such crime though but psychology is influenced by the surroundings. This need behavioral change. i think urban design can help more with developing the mind set up of a person like designing more playgrounds in area, showcasing the respect of women in religion and law if crime occurs in major points of urban area, istalling CCTV camera using proper design in critical point so that its easily visible clearly and also some quick response police units place can be designed also. There can also be placement of combined response team like a building having persons for medicare, fire, law enforcer, trafiic in one building. Thanks
I really don't know how architectural design can can achieve a deterrent or preventive effect against sexual harassment. Debashish believes external Architectural designs can. I will say this: most cases of sexual harassment occur in the most clandestine of places and they are veiled or presented with a façade or made to appear with a veneer of harmless conduct.
I believe that using outward signs or ethical behavioral reminders placed at strategic places where harassment may plausibly occur, and also encouraging potential victims to report incidents; and, requiring persons in position of authority to act ethically, by reminding them of the implications of their actions on the victim and themselves and the workplace.
Though I am not providing a definite answer of YES or NO to this question. But you may refer to two of my researches. These definitely indicate that sense of safety, interaction between people, intent of people has a bearing on architecture and built environment.

This is a social problem. From the perspective of culture, some reasons can be found, such as prejudice against women, disrespect and so on.Through research,
You have made a very important and interesting discussion. To begin the discussion, I will provide you with an introduction so that we can reach good results with the discussions that you and other researchers will present.
Suggestions for increasing the presence of women in urban areas:
- Lack of urban facilities and equipment such as toilets, etc. or attention to urban furniture such as telephone booths that create special hangouts keep women away from the city. The provision of neighborhood services also paves the way for the voluntary presence of women in the city. Where there is a high level of human relations, the rate of crime is reduced. Because social obligations are high, people pay a lot of attention to each other and it is not possible to isolate individuals.
- Environmental desirability such as clean environment, aesthetic features and proper design can prevent the isolation of women in the city. Of course, this recommendation is important because, according to the broken window theory, crime is the result of a disorder. for example; If the window is broken and not repaired, Anx, who tends to break the law and social norms, will break another glass by observing the indifference of the society. It will not be long before more glass is broken.
- Increasing environmental responsiveness, which includes considering the necessary facilities in space planning, creating a suitable open space for children and mothers' supervision, facilitating the movement of mothers and children, and so on.
- Increasing environmental security, both at night and during the day, so that there is enough light in the city, pedestrians can be seen in different places and there is access to safe centers.
