In many countries, some journals are published only as print. Abstract of Scientific seminars are published as booklet. Most of the books of college and University level study are sold after printing.

Nothing should be made compulsory. The replacement of paper is not a matter of thinking, it is a matter of technology. Stone tablets are also out.

Technology is necessary at all times, but the conditions of education in the country remain the main decision maker.
Print publication & E publication both remain the basic ideal need for higher study . All the literature including for higher study ,standard books in printing ,serve the very useful information & guide line for higher study for which we cannot overlook printing for higher study .
E is the modern trend where their usefulness for higher study cannot be overlook .For higher study E importance may help the students for fast recording information & timely guideline even from Google . In this line printing & E both are basic need for higher study .

Digital or e-publishing has certain key advantages like ease, cost and eco-friendliness over print-publishing. There can be no doubt that digital publishing is the future. Instead of depleting our precious forest resources and destroying our planet in the process, we need to turn to these technological advancements for a better and greener tomorrow.
In whatever form, scientific literature should be available to the common man free of cost...

We run one free, open access, peer reviewed journal for last 7 years. It is not an easy task to deliver knowledge materials free of cost. e publication also require good labour and expenditure.
it depends on researchers requirements and their universities demand to promote or, evaluation. so the conference must clarify the publication type its hard copy or e-publication or only abstract.

Digital publications seems good in terms of eco - friendly approach. But the concept of library and referring will be missing as scholars find everything in their pocket. I feel thinking tank may go down due to incomplete reading.

Dear Dr. Pattanayak Sir. Agree with you regarding the challenges faced at maintaining the standards of the journal. I suppose getting funding in the form of relevant advertisements without diluting the true purpose of the journal would be a nice idea.
For example most of the social media apps which are used by majority of the people are free for users and hence the popularity.
But then I suppose we can really not compare social media apps with scientific journals.
Going back to your original point Id definitely support for e publications as we are so used to rely on smart phones/ laptops for getting information. hard copies (limited copies) should still be there for people interested in reading them in libraries. This would maintain a fine balance.
E-publications are increasingly used. Once, for example, there were no computers, everything was written by hand - technology changes life.
It is true we are cutting too many trees, so we have to limit the amount of paper used.

A whole industry has evolved around books and journals, with their own standards and conventions which have nothing to do with scientific content and quality. And so on, and so on, ...

- Why shouldn't we appreciate the advantages of modern ways of communication and collaborating? Lightweight versions of books and journals which can easily be corrected and amended on the fly? Dynamic books and journals with animated pictures and graphs, with audio and video interspersed, etc.? Entirely new forms of scholarly communication and collaboration without expensive and troublesome travelling?
OK, it is still a challenge for many of us, especially the elder generations, which have suffered from many "child diseases" of those new ways of communication and collaboration. But remember that it took also many decades, even centuries, for print media to become mature! Don't blame technology for our own "cognitive laziness" and "learning deficits".
So-called electronic books (abbr.: e-books or ebooks) are just digital imitations of the traditional book. Surely imitations can't beat their originals for various reasons: ergonomic reasons, psychological reasons, cultural reasons, historical reasons, and so on. This fact has been documented very well since the beginning of the "paperless society" hysteria (1970 onwards).
Nevertheless, there will be a place for digital books in the future as their enabling hardware, software and design technology will mature. Ebooks aren't yet mature, there is still huge potential and need for improvement.
Current users of ebooks are just the "guinea pigs" for industry and marketing to find out about their strength and weakness. You will always find enthusiastic people (mind the Hawthorne effect !) willing to serve as a guinea pig in such experiments (marketing calls them "early adopters", you may find out more on this if you type in "first users" in your browser).
That's how industry and marketing work - in contrast to basic science, research and development. Examples abound: cars, bikes, radio, tv, phone, household gadgets, and so on. All have a very long history of very slow improvement due to the ongoing mass experiments which has to finance themselves by pre-mature (!) marketing and selling of new technology.

From all the wood extracted around the world’s forests substantial amount is used directly by the paper industry. The paper industry depends on trees and needs thriving forests. It is very much in its interests that this raw material can be used sustainably and will remain available as a raw material to future generations. Switching over to e-publication can be a viable solution.
Ya definitely as research journal concerns from my point of view.
It is good to worry about the plants and nature. We should maintain simpler life to ease the burden on the nature due to higher lifestyles. Making reads on screens is not ample.
I think government should impose taxes on the products made by cutting trees. Banning print is not wise. As some people love reading in print.
E - publications can be accessed anywhere at any time. Though, print publications can't be fully replaced but need to be reduced to the extent possible. Reducing use of paper will save our precious forests.
