This should not only concern everyone, scientist and layperson alike, but should also anger you, for this is something that should not have happened, plus, I truly fear, this portends far greater mishaps in the future from scientists attempting to 'better' the world.
Well, the truth is coming out about the recent Zika epidemic--soon to come to a town near you. The scientist released genetically modified organisms in the effort to control the very mosquitoes and spread of diseases now ravaging the Americas. It turns out that there was at least one scientist who warned of releasing the GMOs; but, was ignored, of course, and now the world faces an even larger problem. There were two 'mistakes', 1) there was some 3-4% chance for survival of the GMO mosquitoes; 2) Brazil is fourth largest user of tetracycline antibiotic. The first statistic is the minimum survival rate of GMOs to reproductive age. The second fact of antibiotics is that this one substance, somehow, enables a greater survival of GMOs. So, someone really failed to do their homework or profits still rule the day.
For greater detail of the fiasco, read link below.
So, question: Do you support GMOs?
As a subpart to the question: Do you think the science of genetically modified organisms spells disaster for humanity?
