Many students are familiar with trying to find free plag check services and running their papers and dissertation work through them. I was wondering if seasoned researchers also run their papers through plagiarism checkers, paid or free. Or do you trust that what you wrote would be plagiarism-free as you have written it honestly? I know many people also raise the concern that plag checkers store your files, while others say that it does not do any practical harm.
I am curious about your stance on this. Do you use plag checks? If yes, which ones?

Since there is no guarantee that the original content of your manuscript might not be copied and sold to others before it is published by you, I discourage using any free-software-checkers for plagiarism; some of them are betrayers. On the other hand, I don't believe that there is a completely free one!
In any way, if you are insisting to use anti-plagiarism software, offline checker programs are better than online ones. If I were you, I prefer to use my own words instead.

Dear Farheen Meraj as indicated by Anton Vrdoljak there are various free plagiarism checkers available. However, decide for yourself if you really need one! We never used these tools for our research papers. It's just a matter of writing the texts with your own words and avoid copy-and past. This way we always got along without the use of any plagiarism checker. Perhaps I was lucky that I scientifically grew up when there was no internet. The manuscript of my own PhD thesis (see cited below) was first written by hand and then typed with a typewriter. At that time there was no such thing as "copy-and-paste".

Yes, I use Turnitin for checking plagiarism of papers submitted by my students as well as my own research papers. I think in today’s age of technology and availability of resources on internet, it is important and very difficult to maintain academic integrity. As editors, we conduct plagiarism tests on submitted manuscripts before sending them for review. This helps us not to waste our energies on nonscientific, poorly written manuscripts. But, authors can check their manuscripts before submitting them. Yet, if you conducted your research rigorously and wrote it by following scholarly principles, there is no need to do so before the manuscript submission. Regards
Dear Farheen Meraj I fully agree with Dickson Adom in that most serious editors conduct plagiarism tests anyway. I may be old-fashioned, but we never checked our manuscripts for plagiarism before submission. Of course, it doesn't hurt, but I have enough experience in writing scientific manuscript to judge this for myself. Perhaps it's an advantage that I scientifically grew up at a time when there was no internet and no copy-and-paste.

I understand your frustration dear Tripathi. The problem is with the features you select for the plagiarism test and how the results are translated. Many people lack the technical know-how. In my institution, there is periodic workshop organized by the library and information science unit for faculty in departments who need such training (we use Turnitin). Probably, some journal editors and manuscript handlers must be trained as well to avoid needless frustration of authors with wrong analysis of plagiarism tests.

You are utterly right and I know that you are more experienced in scholarly writing. Ideally, knowing the art of scholarly writing is the solution. Unfortunately, some take the 'cheap' format of poor writing (cut-paste) without any serious synthesis and construction of knowledge from what they read. They often worry about their write-ups that they might have committed academic theft which in most times is in excusable.
Yes, indeed, scientific papers need to pass through plagiarism checks. Coz we should write our perspective or concluding remarks from the points mentioned in other published articles. This is well stated in the art of scholarly writing; and we need to stick to this rule. To do so, similarity check soft wares are significant. I personally recommend iTenticate and Turnitin.

Yes. Manuscripts should be tested using a plagiarism software. However, ensure that the software database do not retain the uploaded file after testing. This would sometimes lead to 100% similarity index once uploaded to a journal.
Dear Farheen Meraj personally I would try to avoid and copy-and-past right away and even be careful copying entire phrases and paragraphs form your own previous papers. Sometimes this is difficult to avoid e.g. in the Introduction when the manuscript belongs to a longer-running research project. In any case you should always try to write your manuscript with your own words. However, it doesn't hurt running the text through a plagiarism checking software.

Personally, after noting down my ideas and finishing the write-up, I check it using a trustworthy plagiarism checker to shun any similarity with others. Checking for plagiarism is a common practice among many seasoned and burgeoning scholars. If someone goes for a free plagiarism check, they need to be careful in reading the privacy statement of the service provider. Frankly, nothing is totally gratis—there might be something in return!
Yes, I recommend running a plagiarism check not only on what you write but also on what you read. Nobody wants to look foolish reading a fake piece!

To avoid rejection of the research article due to a similarity issue, one should check an article before submission. The emphasizing fact is, premium version of well-reputed similarity checkers (e.g. Turnitin, iTHENTICATE, etc.) is recommended to ensure the exactness of the report and to avoid risks as well. It is worth mentioning that, The account for the similarity checkers should be a "Non-repository" type i.e. the database of the similarity checkers would not store the manuscript on their database after checking.
If you ask me, which one I prefer then I would say Turnitin.
