My best estimate is that the impact factor algorithm has been altered possibly with a weighting added according to the journal and almost certainly with a weighting introduced in respect of authorship. This been discussed with some insight and a little humour within the link I give below.
If we could find out exactly what had been altered/added then maybe we could consider whether or not the adjusted impact factor algorithm actually provides an improved measure of impact. Clearly, the aim should be to generate a more effective measure.
