A paper that discusses the balance between economic incentives, community participation and sustainable nature-based tourism. While recognizing that giving the community "a piece of the pie"  does  create a favorable impression towards tourism,  the context of nature-based tourism also poses special challenges in the sense of sustainability. In particular, planning for a self-sustaining cycle of net  positive socio-economic impact, based on empowerment. Such that in the long run more people would begin to take ownership of the tourism resource and practice adaptive management to fortify the destination's resilience.
