Hello Piotr,

The United States urban development, renewal, gentrification, and so-called, slum eradication history is replete with many such conflicts. The 1950's and 1960's are very active periods for transportation-community conflicts.  Additionally, former President Lyndon Johnson's 'war on poverty' programs, implemented by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development may offer a rich environment for uncovering such conflicts.  There are far too numerous to cite in this reply.  Prior to that, you may want to explore the issue using key word like 'urban renewal', Works Progress Administration (WPA--created during the F.D. Roosevelt Administration in the 1930's involved considerable transportation projects.  The research data base of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and U.S. Department of Housing (HUD), may also be useful for your purposes.  In the hopes that it will lead you to other reference material, I've offer the following short list:

More of general interest (rather than an academic case study), I would recommend Joe Moran's "On Roads - A Hidden History". It's got a chapter on motorway conflicts throughout history (aptly titled "You can stuff your motorway"), and is in general a very pleasant and insightful read.

One of the most interesting recent examples I know about relates to the Bukit Brown Chinese Cimetery in Singapore, in the middle of which the government built a new road. This led to a long-lasting controversy, that implied a discussion on the very nature of decision-making processes and even of the local political system.

I interviewed (for an upcoming article) some of the stakeholders of this controversy (planners, activists...)
