In Pakistan, from school level to college level (Grade 3-12)the language learners(LLs) are asked to translate urdu passages in English to assess their proficiency in English as a foreign/second/third language. Likewise, to guage the proficiency of the LLs, they are asked to translate passages from English to Urdu.
In China, a standardized national EFL test, College English Test Band 4 & 6, includes translation items. Students are asked to translate a paragraph from Chinese to English.
In China, s standardized national test for English majors, Test for English Majors-Band 8 (TEM-8), includes translation items. Students are asked to do both Chinese to English and English to Chinese translations.
Taiwan has a national English language proficiency test called the General English Proficiency Test (GEPT). It has several different levels. The intermediate and upper intermediate levels both include a Chinese to English translation passage as part of the writing component (along with an essay).

Foreign students in Germany take a language proficiency exam called a Nacherzählung - A story is read in German to exam takers who must then relate the story back in writing as closely as they can. The Nacherzählung has a long successful history of placing prospective students.
