Hello, I am looking for autonomous, robust and cheap salt water data logger for measurement in estuarine areas. In feedback on some good sensors will be appreciated.
Hi Nicolas, have you looked at the HOBO range of loggers (not particularly cheap but probably as cheap as you will find for such a device- around £7-800 stirling. They can be found here ; http://www.tempcon.co.uk/data-loggers/hobo-data-loggers/hobo-conductivity-and-salinity-data-logger?gclid=CNCQyu3G9MgCFVG6GwodEW8Jfg
Nicolas, have a look at the Sontek Castaway CTD. It is a very small, very robust, completely sealed (data collection prgramming and downloading without connector via bluetooth) and easy to handle probe that includes a GPS for positioning. I'm not sure about the price but that would be easy to obtain.
For salt water data logger, we have used EC logger namely Wissenscnnaftlich Technische Werkstatten ( WTW ). This has sophisticated EC, TDS, pH and Temperature logger with very sensitive sensor along with monitoring devise recording system. Furthermore, graduated cable up to the depth of 200 meters. We have used this for delineation of fresh water aquifer systems in coastal regions of India, and our results are well recognised and published in repute journals.
Salinity and temperature are THE most frequently measured marine parameters, so you should have many options of instrument suppliers in Europe. The Hobo loggers manufactured by Onset (onsetcomp.com) in the US are rugged, reliable, and relatively inexpensive (USD$ 750). "Inexpensive" is relative: The estuarine environment is harsh and unforgiving, and measuring salinity (conductivity) accurately requires good equipment. If you expect long deployments, plan to prevent bio-fouling.
Hi Nico. We are looking for some like you need. We are using Solinst LTC leveloggers, but they are very fragile and expensive, we have a very bad experience whith them
I'm working on the Gironde estuary since 2004, and the Loire estuary since 2007, and I managed a new riverine monitoring network since 2015 for the assessment of water quality entering 5 estuaries.
I used NKE probes (CTD and Multiparameter), I tried also Schlumberger Mini Diver... and if I really need low cost monitiring, I use old WTW 340 and 350 but these are not the more usefull devices !
I had a very bad experience with Solints LTC dataloggers, they are expensive and fail at high salinities (over 50 o/oo); Solints promise a new LTC more robust in the future....will see. At the moment I'm looking for a device that be usefulln in mangroves
