I work as a temporary lecturer at a Brazilian university in a middle-sized city in the state of São Paulo. The optional module I'm offering this semester is Digital Anthropology.One of the reasons why I chose to offer this module is that Digital Anthropology enables us to critically analyse the integrative (and disintegrative) potential of social media and other instances of online communication vis-à-vis globalisation. Also, since my research interests relate to multilingualism and language politics, I also take this opportunity to discuss with my students how the online use of language plays a role in enabling and hindering certain expressions of global citizenship. For example, what is the point of having access to information (mostly in English) about the entire world via the internet if most of my students can only speak Portuguese? This is the kind of reflection on global citizenship that I try to encourage in my work in Brazil. Hope it helps!
