I am looking for a brief, validated, and publicly available self-report measure of parenting attitudes and/or behaviors that would be appropriate for prospective foster parents. I am considering the AAPI-2, but would prefer a briefer and lower cost instrument.
I'm afraid a briefer instrument would have even lower predictive validity.
I myself used T. Leary's interaction rosette, Eysenck's neuroticism scale and Rogers' empathy etc. scales. To examine prospective foster children and match them with foster parents, I used similar questionnaires and the BSAQ. I validated one of those instruments. Are you interested in this validation? Other properties like children's ages etc., also proved to be good predictors.
I still have all the selection and outcome data of a hundred of adoptive and foster families and homes placements and their outcomes. If anyone is interested in continuing the predictive validation of those selection questionnaires, (s)he is welcome.
I am not sure what is available specifically for foster parents but the Parenting Sense of Competence (PSOC) developed by Johnston and Mash (1989) is a 17 item self-report measure of parenting competencies that could prove useful. You can find a free copy using the link below

Jan -- I would be interested in seeing the validation you conducted, if it is available. I'm not familiar with the BSAQ but would be interested in learning more about it.
Nicole -- thank you for the suggestion and the link. The PSOC does look similar to the types of questions I was looking for, although it focuses more on an individual's personal experience of competence in their current role as a parent, whereas the parents I would be surveying may or may not have current parenting responsibilities and are preparing to foster or adopt. Still, the constructs are definitely relevant and it could potentially be adapted.
In the interim, I moved ahead with using the AAPI-2. I like the domains that it covers, but am still concerned about the length and whether it will truly be sensitive to change with this population.
