Dear Amina, I am quite sure that every research starts with a pilot study. After receiving some data one can make up one's mind whether it is useful to continue or to stop with it. At any rate, all our INAA research started with a few samples that represented the question(s) that were posed to us. If you have a big request for your analytical work, your laboratory sometimes does not have the time or the funds to continue the pilot study ad fundum but, at least, the path is set for scientists to continue the pilot at their own labs or those of others.

Pilot studies allow one to assess data variability, which can help a scientist figure out sample-size needs to achieve statistical power. Moreover, pilot studies to "see what happens" may serendipitously turn into full studies, as in this ongoing project of mine:

Pilot studies are a crucial element of a good study design. Conducting a pilot study does not guarantee success in the main study, but it does increase the likelihood of success. Pilot studies fulfill a range of important functions and can provide valuable insights for other researchers.

The biggest problem w/ survey data, particularly those of a political nature, is bias, as you must depend on who has the time & interest to fill the survey out. Hence, it's good to have follow-up reminders to increase response rates, & perhaps even offer a reward for doing so. Also advertising the survey thru multiple channels can help reach a broader audience.

Pilot projects is a good risk mitigation strategy.

If the actual study is really complicated in terms of the number of variables involved as well as the difficulty and expense carrying out the experiment, it is a good idea to do a pilot study with a limited sample being well aware of the limitations that may be imposed. Based on the findings of the pilot study one may proceed with methods as to how the study can be extended and generalized to other (larger) environments or conditions.

Having worked in commercialization of a few bioprocesses, I feel, pilot study is the pre-final stage of any defined technology (after months of research and development). I personally, commence from a broader set of experiments in the micro-level reactors followed by mini-reactors then the bench top reactors. After these operations, a slightly bigger bench top reactor would be used followed by a pilot scale operation in which every single parameter, process variable, feed component, feeding methodology, time points are fixed; IF there happens to be a yield reduction in any of the experimental series, we go back to the previous step to study the reason for the failure.

Pilot studies are very essential for a good study design, especially when you want to utilize factor analysis before you distribute questionnaires to the sample of the study.

I always recommend a pilot study. It gives you the opportunity to test your assumptions and make the necessary adjustments before undertaking the main research. It can be thought of as an experiment before the experiment - a lower risk way to increase your research's probability of success.

It seems to me and I may be wrong but wouldn't it depend on the scope of your primary study. If you are primary study is a laboratory study would you need a pilot study? In larger studies they can be extremely important. In Port Angeles Harbor the principal liable party (PLP) conducted a pilot study where they placed 15 cm of clean sand on a wood debris site at 10 meters water depth and transplanted eel grass on the clean material. Their idea being that the clean material would insulate the eel grass from the hydrogen sulfide generated by the wood debris. Well it didn't work so well. So the PLP decided not to expand it on a larger scale. In this case the pilot study was extremely important.

A Pilot study gives the most widely accepted, which give reliable results compared to theoretical studies and other studies because they take into account all factors that may affect the study into consideration before carrying out the study.

Good question.

In my opinion all depends on two things: the sample size of the pilot study and the results of it.

-If the results of the pilot suty are positive (in both statitiscal and clinical terms), a bigger study probably will be positive. So, if you decide to do it, this larger study should add more information than the pilot study to be make it worthwhile to do it. Otherwise problably it is better to use your effort and money in other objectives because the reviewers will say you that you do not add nothing to the current knowledge in this field.

-If the results are negative (but you see a trend towards a positive results) you have the best scenario to perform a bigger study. Probbaly the pilot study was made under a statistical type II error, and so your probability to get a positive result in the larger study is high

-If the results are totally negative and the pilot is not too small, probably it is not woth to do a larger study.

Anyway, I think that a good pilot study id neccesary when you need a large sample size to perform a full study and the costs are high. Moreover, sometimes a pilot study gives you more and new ideas in order to enrich the full study.

So, que next question is. Whay is the mininum size (foer example in terms of percentage of the sample size needed to respond a question) that gives you enough confidence to decide if a full study id needed?.

You are right, MA. Indeed, if the sample size for pilot study is too large, it doesn't help matters. Staying within a manageable sample size in a pilot study is the best way to go.

Yes. But: in this case, the quality and ability of the pilot matters more than the study itself. These kind of methodical explorations can help to save costs, and even more important, lives. Sometimes, a soft landing is not possible and all depends on the craft of the pilot(s).

The role of a pilot study can be to test an uncertain hypothesis or to uncover problems that might compromise the data on a large scale.

Sure, there is no doubt that the pilot study qualifies the large scale research endeavor. It is a crucial attempt to make our research project near the scientific rigors. So, every researcher should pass through this phase in any research attempt.

Yes obviously it is important. Firstly, we make ourselves known about feasibility of our study. It makes us assured about whether the study on which we are going to spend our resources is worthy or not. Secondly, the statistical and methodological soundness comes from pilot study. These very important two legs of any research are provided by the pilot trial.
