When you use renewable energies to give energy in a building exist three way: individual, microgrid and interconnection grid. How do you believe these kind of ways could implement in Buildings design? I'm working at Energy efficient research and the last information that I have is that the consumption will increase in 100% for the next 20 years. Do you know any strategy for reduce consumption?
Yes it is possible to develop large energy grid by using renewable energy sources and this concept is called super-grid i.e. the interconnection of several geographically dispersed microgrids that are interconnected to each other to reduce the intermittency of the renewable energy sources. Lab experiments has been done on this concept. for more details you need to look on my publications.
Your main question seems to be about international power transmission.
Even without variable renewables, international grid connections are useful to smooth out spatial and temporal variations in power supply and demand, and thus make electricity prices more constant. Such connections already exist in south America. Expanding this international transmission will certainly help to integrate variable renewables. Creating a separate grid for renewable power only, as your question seems to suggest, would be rather inefficient: For many years to come the power supply will come from a mixture of conventional and renewable power plants. It would be a waste of resources if they would use separate grids.
There are such plans in the EU but I am also skeptical about building a separate grid for RES-only purposes.

Today Architectural design is orient to passive systems, but in most of the cases that kind of solutions require mix passive systems (Isolation wall, etc) with active systems (HVAC, etc) to be efficient. So, some architects believe that is better the design Autonomous buildings into the cities. However, autonomous buildings would be impractical in big urban areas, because the individual energy efficient consumption impact is difficult to measuring into big urban areas. Dr. Ninova, I have a question to you. Do you believe that big energy interconnection grid is a good option to control Efficient energy impact in big urban areas?
