I have come to realise that the common courtesies students are expected to know at the tertiary level are not so common today. It appears in our fast pace digital society, we have less face-to-face interaction and some of the social graces (e.g., eye contact and silent cell phones) that come with such interaction are slowly slipping away. Do we need to teach our students classroom etiquette? I'll appreciate your input.

I do this etiquette input after initial icebreaking session. Make them feel the importance of the study and narrate them with my experience in industries and create a big picture where I can support them to be.

Some tips for the teacher
- Show up on time. If you're late, either the instructor leaves you behind, which is no fun for you, or the entire class waits for you to catch up, which is no fun for them.
- Don't try to fold two of the thing you're taking. Teachers typically watch for the cessation of folding to move on to the next step, and it's not fair to the other students for them to have to wait because the teacher is waiting on you to finish your second model. For the same reason, don't fill waiting time by folding something else; again, you will cause the teacher to wait and thus delay the entire class.
- If you want to record your step folds, a small digital camera is OK to shoot pictures of your own folding for your own records. It is not OK to make people wait while you try to draw diagrams.

Dear Debra, I understand what you expect by 'common courtesies students are expected to know' since I have been hearing such complains from a lot of my colleagues. Let me begin with this statement : the classroom etiquette of current students is vastly different from what was expected out of us when we were students. However, it is debatable whether our etiquette were correct and the etiquette of modern students are wrong. It is highly subjective.
After going through lot of struggles I have come to the conclusion that our complains have more to do with our own expectations than the actual lack of etiquette. First of all, with the change of time, there is a distinct change in behavioral expectations as well. However, we still judge our students based upon what was considered to be acceptable behavior when we went to college. These students have not experienced that, hence they have nothing to change.
We, on the other hand have been brought up by certain behavioral expectations a couple of decades (even more) ago and have not adjusted to the changing environment. As you rightly said, less face-to-face interaction is one of those changes. It will have its effects.
Lastly, Krishnan has given some tips that I believe would be a good starting point. It will not alter the classroom etiquette of our students but will help us in becoming a bit more tolerant.
Yes, we as professors now must teach our students basic etiquette and professional behavior. Students are quite unaware of manners, and they mindlessly react to their cell/smart phone without thinking about the affect on others (students and teachers).
Noman - while you make some good points, you are also forgetting some of the most important basics that becoming mature and living in a civil society entails and desperately needs. For example, do you discount all of the religious beliefs and teachings of your parents? If not, then why should we discount basic courtesy that they (hopefully) taught us as well. While we do need to adjust with changes in society, I do not think it is ever appropriate for one student to disrupt other students and the professor just so they can catch up on the newest news from a friend.
