I have been heating carbon black at 140 degree cencius for 2 hours before making composites with polmer. This used to improve conductivity. Now I want to use MWCNT as conducting filler with same polymer. So do we need to heat CNTs also. If yes, What so what is the temperature?
It depends on the polymer, but normally MWNT composites can be made by dispersion in solvents.
In order to desorb undesirable organics, gases and moisture, you should do it. It is surprising what amounts you will register. Nanodiamonds loose approx. 10% upon heating.
We usually disperse the MWCNTs in DMF at 1 mg.mL^-1 and add the polymer. We use moderate ultrasonic agitation for 30 minutes to ensure a homogeneous dispersion before vacuum filtration. The conductivity of the resultant composites are very good.
if the polymer is solid you will need to heat the polymer before applying MWCNT to ensure the good dispersion
It is not necessary to heat MWCNTs before preparing nanocomosites plymer/MWCNTs.
