Of all the queries and threads I read so far in RG, I find this particular query and the replies received so far - especially by Prof. Mahfuz - intellectually challenging and requiring deep thoughts. Hidden dimensions of the hyperspace are explored by all religions as well as science. I hope to learn more from friends on this great topic!

People are looking for simple solutions. We love simplification. In practical situations, we reduce the dimensionality when it is only possible. However, the word is a very complex, and I mostly agree with String Theory. In this theory can exist even 10D or 11D.

Thanks for sharing, but I feel incompetent to find answers. What we percieve is the 4 dim space-time world. The rest are theories without proofs. I will wait some more decades to learn.

I wish someone like Christopher Nolan takes a mind-blowing movie on this higher dimension theme.

I am not a physicist, byt after reading some papers on the subject, I think we have to define the term "dimension": from the point of view of the material world in which we leave, and the view of a "mathematical" world, where theories tries to build a unique model for the force in action in universe.

The problem that had physicists (and have yet)  is a certain "contradiction" between  theory of general relativity and quantic physic. The different interaction  of the different force at the atomic and subatomic  level (strong, weak, electromagnetic ..., ),  whose  model equations   have been confirmed  by the "visualisation"  of Higgs boson (2013); and for which quantic physic can be applied at this level, cannot include   gravitation force  intervening in general relativity.

It was the  reason of development of new theories ione of which being string theory, as underlined by Krishnan.

But in this case, this is a mathematical model, and I thought to have red that a minimum of "9 dimensions" would be necessary to validate the model, that have no reality at our material level.

What  I had understood (by theorician could explain us) is that dimension are like "followed suit ", russian doll, where a "string" vibrates at the sub-atomic level, at different wavelenght according to the particule it composes, explaining  the "microscopic" universe (and also constitution of the matter),  and gravitation would be only a particular case with  a particular energy of vibration.

So why I distinguished "universe models" and its "material" level that we can measure or evaluate, not necessary the same.

For me very complicated, but I retained that we cannot limitate us to a fixed number of dimensions (4, 5 to  ...n)

When I was younger I loved all sci-fi movies. Unfortunately for me, after a better study I realized that the options of 'warm-holes', 'traveling in time' and other popular issues, simply do not exist. I didn't feel nice, but probably the real case could be even more fascinated than what they have served to us so many decades.

I t is obvious that you have a good understanding of the dimensions explained in the hollywoodian ""Back to the Future" movie. 

However, I have some doubts if physics can be learned by watching movies made in Hollywood. To respond to your question I should understand precisely what do you mean by "extra dimension". That is :

- what do you understand as dimension?

- why do you consider those 3+1 D basic and the rest extra?

- extra by what? 

Helas, these are questions scrutinising the foundations of the Standard Model - which are not in the scope of hollywoodian film producers. Walking on red carpets and making extra profit is not the same as to see extra dimensions like Alice did staring at the Red Queen through the looking glass...

It seems that when we ask for fundamental basic question (one being  the 3D, 4D or 5D structure of our universe) , we use at the same time our "sensitive" comprehension of the word and our cartesianistic,  materialist one. But since centuries, development of sciences and the hope it could explain alone universe, led to my mind and as already said in other topics, to the actual oppositon between sciences and spirituality. One fundamental question provokes other ones . All are linked.

About the "physical" perception of our environment by our body, our senses are deceiver: ie, it's because we have two eyes that we have the perception of a 3D space; a blind in one eye person leaves in a 2D word. The 4th dimension (time) exists for us solely because existence of  our memory (remembering the  past) and our imagination allowing projection of our mind in the future. And during Alzheimer disease (one sign being lost of memory) , this time-dimension vanishes for patients.

Ancient civilisations knew the relativity of universe perception by our senses, so humans  developped external physical mean to "measure" our environment, independently of our perception.

So,  in parallel the question   asked by philosophists: is there a fixed reality existing independently of the observer ? great question for a scientist; and as already said in an another topic, some theorician in quantic physics postulate that in intricated quantic physics, the observer change the "characteristics" of the observed object, so the "apparent" reality.

I can assure you, one would see her/his entourage in 3D even if s/he would have three eyes by some genetic disorder. The number of observed dimensions is not related to the number of eyes, but to the processive patterns of your mind which are interpreting the information coming from the environment through the senses. A person blind for one of the eyes makes through these patterns a 3D representation of the entourage by enhancing existing other senses (hearing, tactile, olfactory, etc)

The question asked by a philosopher related to the observator-independent reality remains a question until someone takes a big breath and submerge into quantum physics. This situation can not be explained before the version of the double-split experiment proposed by Wheeler (involving the delayed choice) is not understood. But I can assure you, the results of the double split experiment are a piece of cake compared to the Bell inequalities. I am sure, that these were the inequalities in Will's mind when he wrote these lines:

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,

Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

Regarding the double-split experiment, it is a strictly quantum physical question and as to Wheeler’s delayed choice approach this concerns the choice of photons. Quantum physical approaches and Shakespeare’s saying have but so much common characters that Wheeler and Shakespeare, both belonged to the (same) physical world. What about Shakespeare’s thoughts when he(?) wrote the Hamlet? This is a difficult question because even the person of Shakespeare is uncertain. Unfortunately, all this discussion fragments could not bring the tread nearer towards the original question.

When I said a  3D  vision lacking for one eye blind person, this is because, physically and only for the vision phenomena (and not on an imaginative point of view) , the phenonema of "depth of field" is created by the brain because of the reconstruction of the image sawn by each eyes and the distance between  the two. The person with one eye has not the depht dimension, so a vision in 2 dimensions.

So, yes, our perception of the world is a construction of our brain, with our senses. And you are right when you say (if I well understand) that when a sense is not functionning  the others can help us  to build the 3 dimensional representation of classical space.  In example,  hear can give to a blind person an appreciation of the depht, as the bat and its ultrasonic sense.

Even not being a philosopher, and don't knowing double-split experiment of Wheeler and inequalities of Will (also not a physicist), I can understand that there is more complex situation and theory than those already exposed.  

But to my mind, all the questions, from the more simple to the more complex is an expression of our need to undestand who are we as humans with a counsciousness to be humans, and our "positioning" in the universe.

3D is the dimension of Physicality in linear time which is highly polarized, while 4D is  the Astral plane and 5D is an entirely different vibrational dimension and level that exists beyond polarized physicality and consciousness, and beyond the archetypes that exist in the 4D Astral.

5D is an abstraction that hypothetically occur beyond the usual 3D, in 5D or more dimensions, only three regular polytopes exist which are 5-simplex of the simplex family, 5-cube of the hypercube family and 5-orthoplex of the cross polytopes family

In conventional sense (whereby we human can detect without an instrument), there should be 4 dimensions with 1 of them being time which is 1-sided.

The  superstring theory needs 10 space-time dimensions.

Although this thread tends to become frayed due to some higher resonancies with vibrational dimensions beyond physicality, let's come back to your observation. Indeed the double-slit experiment is performed with photons (which are bosons). But the experiment works even if you will use electrons instead of photons – or atoms or buckyball (fulleren) molecules. The delayed choice proposed by Wheeler demonstrates that if you will interact with the objects AFTER they passed through the slits, that interaction will have an influence on how these objects have passed through the slits. At first sight seems like modifying the past.

Of course, the past can not be modified. But the alternative explanation is also impossible to understand in the terms of classical physics (which operates with 3 spatial and 1 temporal dimension). Actually there are 4 interpretations of what happens:

• the Copenhagen interpretation explains it by introducing a probability-wave,
• Feynman's path integral formulation takes in account all possible paths (including that one which circumvents the Moon)
• the relational interpretation takes in account that the particle is in two places in the same moment
• and according to the many world interpretation, parallel universes are opened by every particle interaction.

All these interpretations confirms that the quantum realm can not be described with the terms of classical physics. Although the quantum physical experiments are performed with miniature objects, these experiments are revealing an astounding character of the structure of space and behaviour of time.That's because quantum objects are extended in extra dimensions and this extension modifies their relationship with space-time. Of course, a lot of vibration happens in these extra dimensions – but they are not related to the astral plane, but to earthly properties like charge, mass, spin and so on.

String theory tries to peep at this quantum realm – exactly as Hamlet tried to understand what had happened to his father by following the Ghost in the realm of darkness. (leaving behind Marcellus and Horatio, giving the opportunity to the the first to make his famous remark that something is rotten in the state of Denmark). Wheeler and Shakespeare are in common that both of them tried to understand some uncharted territories of human knowledge.
