Tumor heterogeneity and metastasis correlate with the clinical aggressiveness of cancer. What is the future direction in this field of science? Please share it?
There are genes that enhances metastatic potential of malignant tumors. These genes are found frequently in different cancers. But I rather refere you for a better understanding to the following publications:
Two things to investigate: first, cancer stem cells. If the CSC hypothesis is correct, (and it appears to be so when functional definitions of CSCs are used), then metastasis of tumor cells other than CSCS cannot be productive of a new tumor site. It would also be necessary for the CSC that metastasized to have found a new niche site to establish itself and the new tumor site. Second, it is unlikely that metastasis genes are only in tumor cells or those that had or about to metastsize. They are likely to be in all cells, but are not expressed in most primary tumor cells.
