Universities in western countries do not give credit for case studies while recruiting faculty members. They just go by journals. So, why should one write case studies. I published 4 case studies with Ivey and distributed by Harvard. One turned out to be best seller-worldwide. But many top universities told me that they don't care whether I've published case studies. In my view, writing one case + teaching note takes the time of 2 research papers.
Cases make an important contribution to the field, especially to our colleagues ability to bring contemporary material into the classroom. I agree that they take twice the time and effort of writing a top tier-targeted research paper. The most important personal benefit that I have enjoyed from case writing is the knowledge I acquire that spills over into my research. My approach is to start with a research case and extract a teaching case from that.
I agree with the previous answer that research cases can be "recycled" as teaching cases at times. It's not always easy to make that work though. In addition, I would argue that you should time the case writing effort to your career phase. As a young researcher, your focus should clearly be on research articles - first and foremost. In a later stage, you can then work on case studies that you can also use in your own teaching. It's a good idea to go about this in a collaborative manner, i.e., enlisting the help of master students in the process.
