Yes research should be to change the lives of our communities for the better directly or indirectly, some research have direct applications that changes our lives quickly, others may be not have large impact but cant be neglected.

First, i have to admit that serving the community is the duty of each citizen, and i think it's important for each research to have a goal, but it doesn't have to be directly applicable. Because if it is the case, many researches and sciences are going to be abandoned.
